Toward A Statement Of PrinciplesThis is a featured page

The old adage declares: With Freedom comes Responsibility.

I wholeheartedly agree. Boundary-Breakers in my view assume a much heavier weight of responsibility than ordinary folks, who after all live within their boundaries and all the accompanying rules.

Those responsibilities mainly deal with our treatment of other people. Our presence frequently unsettle those around us. That's part of our mission. But that does not give us the right to impose ourselves on others. In fact, it is essential that we extend the same respect and tolerance to others that we request from them in return.

This page hopes to foster discussion about responsibility. And perhaps we'll evolve here a statement of principles for the free-spirited.

A Different Set of Principles

This set of printicples will grow over time. Offer your suggestions by creating or joining a thread at the bottom of the page. Let's keep our principles positive and life-affirming.

Stand Up Against Hate Speech

I would never have thought of this principle myself, at least not worded this way. However, I discovered it today, 2 June 2008, when I came across this video that was featured on the front page of YouTube.

I hate LABELS of all sorts. Yes, I know they are a convenient way for people to sort things out. BUT they limit possibilities so profoundly -- and create such narrow boxes that we shove people into. And sadly, "labels" contribute so much to hate speech. We simply MUST OBJECT. Tell people, I AM NOT A LABEL!

I stumbled across a provocative YouTube video this morning. Surprisingly, it was the second video on a list of recommended videos of the day. When I saw it, I thought it would be very appropriate to place on our page of principles.

Yes, boundary breakers do, in my view, need a set of principles to guide their thoughts, feelings and actions. If we develop a strong and well-considered set of principles, we "outsiders" may earn increasing attention and respect.
